Housing and Community Health
Helping Families Thrive
Neighborhood House helps families and individuals transition in to permanent affordable housing. Community Health Workers provide critical wraparound supportive services to assist individuals in developing life skills needed to maintain permanent housing and employment:
- Resources and referrals
- Employment readiness and job training programs
- Access to quality healthcare and health insurance enrollment
- Rent and utility assistance
Our goal now, as it was in 1905, is to help low-income families meet their basic needs in the short term, and to put them on the path to achieving long-term self-sufficiency.
MEET A NEIGHBOR
JAMILA
Jamila* and her partner of 17 years were doing what many parents do—working hard and raising their four children. While money was tight for a family of six, they made it work.
Then, Jamila lost her job. Without that income, the family could no longer afford rent, and they soon lost their housing. Over the next nine months, they moved between relatives’ homes and occasional motel rooms.
Each transition brought more challenges: new schools, disrupted friendships, and the emotional toll of instability. “I would have done anything to get out of that situation,” Jamila recalled.
With help from our housing services team, Jamila and her family moved into permanent housing supported by long-term rental assistance. Through our job search support, computer access, and training resources, Jamila found steady employment and the family regained stability.

How do you make a house feel like a home?
Food reminds you of home. The smell of your favorite dish can transport you to another time and place.
For Soheila Azadi, helping refugees find familiar food goes beyond sustenance. It’s a way of helping them create a new home in Portland.
