Art, Community, and a Place to Belong
In times of uncertainty, spaces like Neighborhood House matter more than ever. They are places where neighbors come together, feel safe, and support one another. That spirit now lives on our walls.
A vibrant new mural by local artist Alex Chiu now welcomes neighbors to our Barbur building. Titled Nurturing Growth, the mural is inspired by our logo and tells the story of the many ways we serve our community. From food access to senior support to early childhood education. Alex worked closely with our staff to make sure each detail reflected who we are, even including beloved community members like Peggy from our Chair Aerobics class. The result is a beautiful, meaningful piece that truly feels like home.
And that’s not all. We’re lucky to have two murals! A second mural, generously gifted by Kaiser Permanente Northwest, was created by community members during Portland Sunday Parkways. Designed by artist Travis Czekalski and painted by many hands, it celebrates mental health, connection, and the reminder that no one is alone. We’re honored to give this powerful artwork a permanent home.
As we put the finishing touches on our building, we’re also inviting supporters to leave their mark through naming opportunities.
This project is about more than a building. It’s about the people who gather here and the care they share. Naming a space is a meaningful way to honor a loved one, celebrate a legacy, or show your belief in this community.
Opportunities include spaces like:
-
The Community Center
-
The Free Food Market Check-In Area
-
The Living Room
-
A Classroom
-
The Hospitality Area
-
Outdoor Benches or Gathering Spaces
