Exploring Oregon History at Summer Camp

By Anii Nwizu

During the School Age program summer camp this year, children embarked on an exciting field trip to the Oregon Historical Society in the last week of camp.

The kids eagerly explored three floors of interactive exhibitions. They discovered fascinating artifacts, photographs, and maps that brought Oregon’s rich history to life. The museum’s engaging displays and activities turned learning about the state’s past into an adventure, making it a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

“You might assume that the kids wouldn’t enjoy a history museum field trip, but it’s always a blast and they have a ton of fun” said Angie Rafaele, School Age Program Manager.

Throughout the day, the children actively interacted with the exhibits, diving into hands-on activities and listening to captivating stories about Oregon’s pioneers, Native American cultures, and significant historical events. They were especially thrilled by the Experience Oregon exhibit, which featured a panoramic theater that introduced major themes and set the stage for their exploration. The kids’ eyes widened with wonder as they watched history unfold before them.

“My favorite part was watching the movie. It was really cool,” said camper Noah.*

The field trip was not just educational but also an opportunity for the kids to create lasting memories and strengthen friendships. As they shared their discoveries and excitement, the children enjoyed a spectacular day filled with learning, fun, and laughter, making it an unforgettable adventure through Oregon’s history.
