Meet Jerry: The Man Who Keeps Neighborhood House Running

Jerry’s connection with Neighborhood House (NH) began in 2007. His son chose a painting project for NH’s admin house for his Eagle Scout Project after learning about us through board member John Calhoun.

When Jerry retired from PGE in 2011, he wanted to give back. What started at the admin house in Multnomah Village grew into a 15-year commitment—supporting that building, the Free Food Market, and so much more.

Jerry has helped improve our 19th Ave. site, Head Start’s Ramona site, a former Head Start building in NE Portland, and the Senior Center at the Multnomah Arts Center. But he is more than our “maintenance volunteer.”

During the pandemic, Jerry and his wife delivered food for the Free Food Market. They also showed up year after year to support our Welcome Home benefit.

Over the years, Jerry has fixed roof leaks and basement leaks. He took on plumbing projects, upgraded lighting, installed windows, benches and flower planters. Every winter, he keeps the admin house warm. Every summer, installs AC units to keep staff comfortable. His steady care makes our spaces safe and welcoming.

Through PGE’s volunteer grants and now the Cause Card program, these projects receive vital support. We are deeply grateful to PGE for investing in our community!
