PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A new free food market and senior center is coming to Southwest Portland.

Nonprofit Neighborhood House already operates a free food market on Portland’s west side, but since COVID, the need has skyrocketed.

Now they’re renovating a 16,000 square-foot building on Southwest Barbur Boulevard to meet demand.

“Our vision is that every neighbor has the community and support they need to thrive,” said Chris Chiacchierini, the executive director of Neighborhood House.

The new facility will allow the nonprofit to increase the number of people it serves by 50%.

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, was also there for Friday’s groundbreaking.

“The Neighborhood House really does meet the needs of the community, from children to seniors, and so this is a wonderful project,” she said. “The needs have increased. There’s additional food insecurity but also a need for people to have a place to get together, and this is going to be a wonderful addition to the Southwest Portland community.”
