Volunteer Jonathan More: Solve World Problems By Gardening

By Anii Nwizu

Garden volunteer Jonathan More believes that gardening has the power to solve a lot of the world’s problems.

“Right now, there’s a lot of division in America, and the way we solve that problem is through community,” he said. “The things we do together can help build connections that mend divisional fences.”

Like gardening.

Jonathan has been volunteering in the Neighborhood House Garden for more than three years. He says volunteering not only benefits the community but provides personal rewards for himself. A major highlight for him is working alongside Dan Simchuk, the Garden Guy.

“Dan knows so much and is pretty particular about how he wants things done, having grown up on a farm,” Jonathan shares. “Being able to learn from him is definitely one of the many things that keeps me coming back.”

For Jonathan, community work is essential for building stronger connections.

“I think it’s very important to do community work to build community. It’s just that simple,” he emphasizes. “I believe there are two important things in life: love and service.”

He says this notion is perfectly captured by one of his favorite song recommendations, “Turn off the News (Build a Garden)” by Lukas Nelson.

“It’s a great song with a great message,” he said. “With the news and social media and everything, we need to stop looking at what other people are doing and just… build a garden.”

Jonathan also enjoys the hands-on experience and seeing individuals come together.

”I enjoy the opportunity to be of service. Being able to provide individuals and families with fresh food straight from the garden is something that’s super cool,” Jonathan said. “The other is just the pleasure of getting your hands dirty, planting something, and watching it grow.”

Neighborhood House is truly fortunate to have outstanding and exceptional volunteers. These friendly neighbors are integral to our success and to supporting our community. Their dedication and commitment enable us to carry out our mission and make a significant impact on those we support. We think it’s important to celebrate and showcase all the great work done by our volunteers. Jonathan is a great example of the values that make a great volunteer and community member. We are grateful to have him as a part of our family.
