Our neighbors have been under increasing duress the last several years – higher rents, increased food costs, lack of affordable child care – and we’re seeing increased need for our services. We’ve expanded our programs to meet the growing demand. Now our physical space needs to expand too.
To make that happen, we purchased a transit-accessible building on Barbur Boulevard to be our new service home. With 16,000 square feet of expanded space, we can serve 50-100% more people than our current space can cover.
Our design team recently produced images of what that new home might look like, and we couldn’t be happier. The East wing of the building will house the Free Food Market on the first floor. The Market will triple in size with better and more display cases, and feel more like a grocery shopping experience as a result. On the South wing first floor, the Senior Center will maintain a welcoming and comfortable lounge for gathering, as well as classrooms, activity and meeting spaces.
The second floor is all about community. Large and small meeting spaces will abound for community partners, staff and people we serve. The Resale Shop will live in much-expanded space, accessible to all with the installation of an elevator.
Surveys showed that people wanted to see color, accessibility and thoughtfully-design space that welcomes neighbors, community partners and staff alike. Let us know what you think: development@nhpdx.org
Come see our new home in person! Take a small-group tour, led by staff and volunteers twice-monthly. Bring some friends! We’d love to show off our new home.
